[ARCHIVED] Electric Conservation Tips

Outlet - Spotlight Template

During warmer months, close blinds, shades and drapes on the sunny side of your home to help keep your home's temperature cooler and reduce the work for your AC. Open shades during the cooler months to let the sun warm your home.

Don't leave your electronics on all day long. Only turn on devices when you need them.

Set your thermostat to 78 for summer and 68 for winter. Every degree of extra heating or cooling will increase energy usage 6 - 8 %. Setting your thermostat to a lower temperature than normal will not cool your home faster.

Home appliances using the most electricity:

  • Heating and Cooling units 45-50% (accounting for 25% of annual electric usage)
  • Water Heater 12%
  • Lighting 9-12%
  • Refrigerator 8%
  • Washer and dryer 5%
  • Electric oven 3%
  • Dishwasher 2%
  • TV/Cable box 2%

Electricity usage information was compiled from multiple sources including perchenergy.com and directenergy.com
